  • I changed my Motovlog setup from GoPro 11 to DJI Osmo Action 3. Now I have to test several microphones and USB-C adapters to find the best microphone motovlogging setup for the DJI Action 3. I tested more than 10 combinations until I found the best one.

I was the first one to complaint it to DJI guys officially and then have finally agreed to come up with a special adapter by DJI to fix the issue, so we don't have to attach all the complex stuff and multiple adapters to get the correct audio levels.
BTW, nice video! Very nicely color corrected, loved it.

I also just migrated from GoPro's to DJI Osmo Action 3. I had very simliar mic experiences with the DJI and ended up using my Sena mic and routing audio from the sena to the DJI through the Boya Type C adpater. Those wireless mic's do sound pretty good.

Thanks for all the effort. Audio is always a challenge. I have now bought the DJI adapter (fits both Action 3 and 4) with a Lavalier in my helmet. Setting -8dB Seems to be ok. Will also test Action4 / Mic 2 combo....when/if I buy a Action4. Miv2 I already have (Pocket 3 creators combo) . Only thing is I dont like with a Mic 2 solution is that it dont switch on/off parallell to the Action Cam one button recording. You will have to have it running.

Just bought the Action 3 and the DJI Mics. Plan to try out the magnet on the chins windshield, then velcro/dual lock the mic into the inside of the helmet, and lastly, might adhesive cold-shoe the outside of the helmet and have a lav mic running in IF the dji transmitter doesnt fit inside the helmet nicely. But I have a feeling I wont need to mess with any velcro/duallock/adhesives. Gonna throw 1 transmitter in backpack and 1 in helmet to achieve engine sound + voice. Excited.

Copy and pasting this comment from a different video that mentioned the Rode AI Micro adapter:
    Rhönschrat
I do like the Osmo Action 3 a lot, but still stick to my GoPro setup. Mainly as I find creative ways to deal with some of the issues. For example I developed my own GoPro remote as an iOS App (available in the App Store 😉) that allows my to control multiple GoPros at once while having a clear status on battery, free space and recording. I even got indication if the mic adapter oder Media Mod is connected correctly and show overheating message.
For the Action 3 I use the AI-Micro from RODE as the microphone adapter. This allows a quite good gain control.

I really appreciate your video, this a very helpful and professional test of mics for the Osmo Action 3, I've had this camera for about a year, moved away from a GoPro because as you know is so unreliable, it messed up in my content a lot of times so I went for the OA3, but I also run into the audio issues, I really love the camera, video quality, battery, magnetic mount, everything. I have also tried with a lot of mics and adapters but wasn't able to crack the code as you did haha. It looks like the only way to get better audio with the OA3 is to "overwrite" the audio chip the camera has, like using the Rode AI or the DJI Wireless mic, so the audio gets recorded by an "external" hardware... Thanks again for your video, I just watched the other video you have testing the high SPL mic but that is very expensive for me, trying to find another option, I'm looking at the old Sennheiser ME2 witch has 130 max spl + Rode AI, lets see how it goes. hello! here I am again. Thanks to you I found the ultimate solution, I bought the Rode Ai Micro in combination with the Rode Lavalier Go and everything works great. I set the gain on the action cam to -12, ran several tests with the microphone audio at 20%, 50% and 80%. However, the volume seems low to me. I wanted to ask you if your audio, in the same configuration as mine, did you edit it in post production. Your audio is better, more muffled. Thank you for your answer!

Hi, the best is to record with lower volume, so you do not have distortions and clipping and raise the volume in postproduction.

hi, i have SARAMONIC Blink 500 Pro B2 microphone. Can I use it with the Boya by-k4 adapter, because I tried it with the Boya by-k7, it didn't work, it bothered me a bit. I wanted to ask when I saw you working. do you have any idea?

    • @Marc.Stones

I think the Saranonic has a TRS cable, so it should work with the by k4. Or try this one, works well: amzn.to/44dvgkp

There is a lighting cable delivered with the Rode AI so you can adjust everything with the app.

Thanks for your reply. I ordered all but the DJI mics, going to use the rode lev. mic to stuff in the helmet and also going to try to get my Cardo freecom 4 integrated with the audio to pickup the other riders with me. I will probably place a second mic near one of the speakers within the helmet.

Congratulations for sharing your work, great video. I am however appalled that at the current stage of technology, a motorcyclist who wants to have good audio has to adapt to all this paraphernalia of adapters and wires to have audio coming from his helmet with quality... The manufacturers are really making an effort to create difficulties to sell us facilities... Regrettably, neither dji nor go pro allow direct connection of microphones via bluetooth without using ridiculous adapters...

    Hello Marc Stones,
    Knock....Knock.....
Congratulation i am your new subcriber .
I am impressed with how you showcased all the tests with all the possibilites.
    I am new to moto-vlogging.
I am just searching for a good wireless mic for my moto vlogging.
This video is a complete guide to me and others also.
Once my budget allows i will definitely check on either with dji mic or the setup you shown us in last with Rode.
    Thank you😀🏍
